Xorg -configure segfaults, which may explain default to 800x600. Attached Xorg.99.log shows the backtrace after failing to open /dev/fb0.
Attached xorg.conf restores the correct default and choice of resolutions. It seems to be important to set XAA rather than EXA acceleration (=> blank screen).
