If I understand /var/lib/dpkg/info/xserver-xorg.postinst well (likely not) the monitor ranges should have been written to xorg.conf because you have a "Rage 128" card. Can you please post the output from:
 grep -A2 config/monitor/use_sync_ranges /var/cache/debconf/config.dat
