I tried a different mouse, and that resolved the problem. Then I plugged in the original mouse, and now that one is working properly too. I will investigate this further and see if I can find out more.
Incidentally, I installed CentOS on this computer, and I noticed that it had the same problem with the mouse clicks. I might also try using the same mouse with Windows and see what happens.
