I had the same problem with a fresh install of Gutsy (tribe 5) and using the nvidia-glx-new package from the restricted driver manager (Nvidia 8600 GTS). The installer didn't install the package in the right way too and I had to manually edit xorg.conf. Every time I run 3D games the X server crashes.
