Bug Description

I am using the daily build of Xubuntu 14.04 x64 on a Lenovo Thinkpad x230. If I wake up the computer after it spending some time in the suspend state, the cursor will be invisible. The courser still works (I can click on stuff and hover the invisible cursor over stuff), but the little arrow is not visible. This bug showed up a few days ago after an update. Putting the computer back in suspend state and immediately waking it back up resolves the issue until the next time the computer is put in suspend state for an extended period of time.

It is possible that this bug has something to do with Whisker Menu. Sometimes when the courser is invisible it will still show up over Whisker Menu. Most of the time it is invisible there too.

Description: Ubuntu Trusty Tahr (development branch)
Release: 14.04
xfdesktop version 4.11.4, running on Xfce 4.10

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. Did you enable screen locking on suspend? If yes, please disable it temporary and try to reproduce the problem.

Disabling screen locking seems to have fixed it. As an interesting note, I first disabled screen locking while the courser was invisible. I was then no longer able to get it back by putting the computer to sleep.

affects: xfce4-settings (Ubuntu) → light-locker (Ubuntu)

Please re-enable screen locking and run the terminal commands "killall light-locker; light-locker --debug". Now put your computer in suspend state and resume it 1) immediately and 2) again after an extended period of time. Then attach the generated terminal output to this report.

I did what was requested. I have attached the log produced by putting the computer in suspend state and waking it up immediately. I will attach the log produced by putting the computer in suspend state and waking it up after an extended period of time in a subsequent comment.

I also found that I can get the courser back by killing light-locker from the terminal.

could you please test the patched version of light-locker in this PPA?

As none of us could reproduce the bug, the patch is guesswork, but I hope it will do the trick. Thanks for testing!

On my ThinkPad T42 it happens only when I enter suspend state by closing the lid - using the menu to enter suspend state shows no problems.

The problem seems to be independet of light-locker. I have disabled light-locker in system settings because the screen stays black after wakeup (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1303736 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1259339).

Still the mouse cursor stays invisible after waking up from suspend state (if entered by closing the lid).

Addition to comment #10:
I have disabled automatic screen locking in
- Power Management settings
- Session settings
- Light Locker settings (by completely disabling light locker)
So the screen is not locked when I close the lid, but on wakeup the mouse cursor is invisible.

Simon Steinbeiß (ochosi) wrote :

So, to sum up the previous comments, the issue mentioned in #10 is a different bug (that we know about and that is not related to light-locker) and according to #11 the issue with the hidden mouse-cursor is not due to light-locker, as it also happens without it.

If this is the case, we need to find the culprit elsewhere. Unfortunately I haven't been able to reproduce this at all.

As I mentioned in a previous comment, I was able to eliminate the problem on my computer by removing light-locker and replacing it with gnome-screensaver. It is possible that light-locker triggers when the computer wakes from resume whether locking is enabled or not.

I have uninstalled light-locker and light-locker settings. The problem with the invisible mouse cursor after resuming is still there (similar to what I reported in #10 although at that time I just disabled light-locker).

Since there are reports that the mouse stays visible if the screen is locked (using xscreensaver or gnome-screensaver) during suspend I would suspect that those tools reinitialize the mouse cursor so that the problem is no longer visible.

I would suggest looking at xfce4-powermanager (this should handle suspend mode when lid is closed, right?).

syslog shows different activity when suspend mode is triggered by closing the lid and by pressing the suspend key. I don't know enough about xcfe4-powermanager to analyse the logs but one difference is that there ist an entry

Apr 18 15:39:20 Pellworm dbus[435]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.systemd1' (using servicehelper)

before going into suspend state and an entry

Apr 18 15:39:38 Pellworm dbus[435]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.systemd1'

after resuming. Maybe the dbus activation is interrupted by going into sleep mode too fast.

This one is the log for suspending using the suspend key. The mouse is visible after resume.

Hey Peter, while I appreciate the logs and the report, please don't mix bugreports. There's a separate bugreport for the lid-close "lock on suspend" problem, so posting info about it here is confusing. Let's focus on the missing mouse-cursor.

@Ian: Ok, thanks for testing again. It's very strange though, as we do exactly the same now as gnome-screensaver when waking up from suspend.

I would like to provide some more details about how this problem manifests on my laptop.

1. This problem only seems to occur when the laptop was put to sleep by closing the lid for a while. If the computer is woken up immediately after it goes to sleep, the problem does not occur. It also does not occur if the sleep was initiated by any other means besides closing the lid.
2. When the problem occurs, the screen comes up at minimum brightness when displaying the lock screen. The brightness is still adjustable. When the does not occur, the screen comes up at the brightness it was set to before putting the computer to sleep.
3. The mouse cursor is visible at the lock screen. After the computer is unlocked, the screen goes black. I have a keyboard shortcut I programmed to switch the computer back to using the laptop's screen as the sole and primary screen that I made with ARandR. After pressing that shortcut, the screen turns back on and displays the desktop without the cursor.
4. While the cursor is invisible, it still works. I can use it to hover over stuff and see the results of said hovering. It also works for clicking on stuff. I can use it to relock the computer which will fix the problem. I can also use it to launch a terminal where I can run killall light-locker which also fixes the problem.
5. After light-locker has been killed, the computer works as expected. The screen does not lock and the cursor always comes back after resuming from sleep. Running light-locker from the terminal makes the problem come back.

I hope this helps track down the problem.

Hi Simon,

just to clarify: my comments (apart from #10 where I reference the other bug reports) are not about the "black screen after suspend" problem. It is all just about the missing mouse cursor. When light-locker is not installed (removed with apt-get purge) suspend and resume work except for the invisible mouse - that's why I assumed it is not light-locker causing the problem with the invisible mouse cursor.

My last comment: after killing upowerd and xfce4-power-manager I can still enter suspend mode by closing the lid and the mouse cursor is still there after resuming. To me it seems like an unwanted interaction between different tools handling lid close.

Good luck tracking down the problem.

On 14.04 I did not have this issue; however after the upgrade to 14.10 I also switched fglrx for the radeon driver, so I cannot say that it is not related to that.

I suspend my laptop by closing the lid, and the pointer has always disappeared when I resume...
I have disabled screen locking on resume, but I have not made any changes when it comes to choice of screensaver software.

Also, I can get the pointer back by either changing resolution (runnig xrandr in a terminal) och by connecting and enabling a second monitor. Or using x2x with another machine. Anything that change the resolution in one way or another...

Ian, I did an upgrade. If you know any packages I can swap round to make my install more like a fresh one that would be cool.

I haven't had the cursor disappearing problem since removing xfce4-power-manager and upower, and for some reason my laptop still suspends when the lid is closed. So I'm happy enough with how it's running for now. I was also experiencing another intermittent bug in Network Manager staying asleep after resume, and that seems to have cleared up too.

The bug should be unmarked for Light-locker and added against xfce4-power-manager possibly.

Another way that I have found to (temporary) resolve this problem is to use ARandR. I used ARandR to create a shell script that disables all displays on the system. I also created one to set each of my normal display configurations and assigned keyboard shortcuts to each. When the cursor disappears, I use the keyboard shortcut to disable all displays and then the appropriate keyboard shortcut to re-enable the display configuration that I was using. This seems to fix most display related issues.

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg 1297144

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information.

As well, given the information from the prior release is already available, testing a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

The laptop is for elderly, not technical person so any lock screens with passwords or other workarounds are not solution for me. The only way to avoid it at this point is to set computer to do nothing when lid closes. The same effect is with unistalling power management. Tried gnome power manager but after install I saw no settings for it and I couldn't find it in start menu and the whole package seemed to be not there, although in program manager it showed as "installed". Anyway, I didn't found a viable solution.

It's a serious bug, a show stopper for laptop users and it affects all ubuntu family systems.

Personally, I don't use light-locker as I have found the overlap between light-locker and the xfce4-power-manager to cause weird issues in the past - not to mention the fact that it is confusing to have 2 power managers!

My Ethernet work-around (/etc/pm/sleep.d/pm-helper.sh, attached) does the trick because the resume-recovery issue is in the module r8168. I tried to add psmouse to my pm-helper.sh script but it didn't work. Fortunately, logout followed by login got the mouse cursor back to normal.

From this experience, I assume that the bug is in xfce4 somewhere, probably xfce4-power-manager.

I am tempted to try to reproduce this anomaly with a completely different 14.04.04 desktop (E.g. KDE) on the same hardware and see if the same symptoms occur. If so, then you are probably correct to suspect xorg (2 desktops, same xorg); else, it is probably an xfce issue. The practical problem with doing this is that the setup takes a lot of time and there could be other reasons why the issue is not reproducible under KDE.

In case anyone reading this report might benefit, this is a fast manual work-around that works for my with an HP laptop:

1. Resume from a long-term suspend. Note the disappeared mouse cursor.
2. Ctrl-Alt-F1 ===> getty
3. Ctrl-Alt-F7 ===> back to desktop

The mouse cursor is, hopefully, restored after step 3.

This problem still occurs on at least Xubuntu 16.04 (haven't checked the other variants, but if it's a problem with light-locker, it would presumably affect the default set-up of Xubuntu and Ubuntu). I have found three other old bug reports, bug #554438, bug #552214, and bug #492782, which seem to refer to the same problem, and of course, there may be still more bug reports about this. Of the three I have listed, the last one shows Fix Released for xserver-xorg-video-intel, and, although I have a hybrid graphics system with Intel + AMD, even switching off the AMD GPU in the BIOS settings so that the software never sees the GPU and its driver is not loaded, still causes the mouse pointer to disappear after unlocking the screen through light-locker.

Can someone please provide information on which bug report to use to track this issue?

It seems that this is being handled in bug #1568604 now.

Cursor is missing but works by itself.

Kirill Shustov, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with Ubuntu by ensuring you have the package xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information running the following from a terminal:
ubuntu-bug xorg

Also, please feel free to subscribe me to it.

Possible a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1568604.

Check if switching to a VC (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and back (Alt-F7) fixes the thing.

yes, it helps.
but looks like hack not a solution.

I have one more bug, but related with suspend + hdmi audio output.
Steps to reproduce
1. select "digital stereo (hdmi)" as output device in "Volume control"
configuration "
2. go to suspend
3. recover and no sound on hdmi stereo

I'm also facing this issue with light-locker and Intel graphics on openSUSE Tumbleweed. It does not occur on openSUSE Leap (4.1 kernel), so it is a regression.
