mouse protocol selection?

Bug Description

imps/2 doesn't work for people with >5 button mice (counting the wheel as three
buttons).

Check whether explorerps/2 would work for more people, and/or consider using evdev.

Basically, run with ExplorerPS/2 and 'Buttons 7' or something, and see whether
you get the expected behaviour on all mice. Basically, the scroll wheel, and
all the buttons should always function -- we need to find a base config which
will allow us this, and also to use as many other buttons as possible.

at least on i386 setting the protocol to "auto" seams to be a good solution. This is used in knoppix with very good results.

The button number can't be autodetected, so just set it a bit higher. 16 should be enough for the next time? (that means 12 real buttons + 2D-wheel)
Now we set the ZAxisMapping on the last 2 ("15 16") of them and use xmodmap to get it back to 4/5:
xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 4 5" (we need to get shure, this line will be executed, else the wheel will be broken!)

The real configuration for buttons 6...16 is now done with imwheel.

My back and forward buttons are not working at default on a recent colony3
breezy dist-upgraded daily.
It's an USB Microsoft Intellimouse with 7 buttons.

Should back and forward work?

I have the same problem.

I am using Ubuntu 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon" with a 'Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer' mouse.

The navigation buttons on the left of the mouse, for forward/back does not work.
They're mapped wrong.

The back-button does paste the text in clipboard.
The forward-button does right-click.

This was reported in 2004, and it is still not fixed!
