Investigating further, I found that disabling "Monitors/Same image on all screens", reveals that the Veriton regards itself as a "Laptop (1024x768)" with an extra "Philips (1280x1024)" screen. However, selecting the Philips gives a black monitor with a mouse only.
Obviously, it seems there is some severe internal confusion here. The real Philips LCD screen is physically connected to the only existing VGA port.
