I have to confirm, i experienced the same. Using a ATI X600, OEMmed for Toshiba here, and no sceens found, neither with ati nor with fglrx drivers. Have not tested vesa though.
System worx perfectly fine after downgrade just that package to 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10 again
