This is happening to me too. After upgrade tp 9.10 from 9.04. I get a black screen on boot but can run sudo gdm from recovery. /etc/gdm/custom.conf exists but no values are set. there is no gdm.conf file.

i get : gdm-binary[2544]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found messages and the /proc messages mentioned above
