I had the same problem too, when installing kubuntu-desktop on top of Ubuntu.
It seems to be fixed by running:

sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme

and selecting "/usr/share/icons/DMZ-White/cursor.theme" (it was 7 in my machine)
