I'm no longer using Ubuntu, but I can confirm this makes the problem go away.
I am currently using the intel driver (2.1.1) without any particular settings in xorg.conf ,
and the Elephants Dream movie now works fine ( https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2772#c7 ).
I switched back to i810 (1.7.4), and it crashes again, just like before.
I suppose this applies to Ubuntu as well.
