Okay, I think my problem is that the touchpad driver locks the touchpad "clicked", i.e. it thinks I've clicked-and-held.
I get these messages beforehand in dmesg:
[124746.285974] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 5
[124746.287564] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 1
[124746.294845] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 - driver resynched.
[124746.300127] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 1
[124746.323515] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 - driver resynched.
Keyboard events, etc., are affected because that's how it acts when the mouse is clicked:
- alt-tab doesn't do anything but ctrl-alt-left/right do
- pressing the suspend key waits and goes blank instead of fading, and comes straight back up to the desktop
