Confirmed fixed on Xubuntu Jaunty Beta. Although the Beta live CD freezes up with a blank screen and no console about half the time, when it does work the old Logix monitor comes up at 1280x960 with sensibly sized panel fonts, yay!

A big thank-you to everyone who helped sort this out.
This bug-fix should keep a few old-style-EDID monitors out of landfill for a little longer.
