I was about to do as you asked and open a new bug for the updated linux-image breaking the brightness indicator for some of us dell users, but it appears that the last update i received has fixed this problem!

So for reference I am running a Dell Inspirion 6400
gnome-power-manager 2.24.0-0ubuntu8.1
linux-image-2.6.27-10.20

Hopefully the other's users problems are fixed as well.
