For comparison, I independently discovered 'setxkbmap -model evdev -layout gb -option lv3:ralt_switch' upon encountering this bug, and it worked fine for me.

I do hope somebody has made sure that the special cases (abnt2 and jp106 for Brazilian and Japanese keymaps) continue to work. :-)
