I can verify Wouter's experience: For KDE the NUMLOCK light operates backwards or opposite the actual keypad behavior.

A workaround is to manually edit /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc and immediately after [X-*-Greeter] add NumLock=On. Save and restart KDM.
