Bug Description

Dell latitude e7450, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

Swapped disk from latitude e7440 with faulty HDMI port as a quick fix while it gets repaired/replaced under warranty. "Pleasantly" surprised to find the e7450 default display's screen resolution capped abysmally low and neither video out port working.

Please update the bug description to clarify if the machine with the faulty HDMI port is the one with a capped resolution.

I experienced a similar issue recently. In my case it was a poor connection on the HDMI plug limiting the available resolutions. The fix for me was to plug in a fresh HDMI cable that cleaned out the socket and then gave a better connection. Full resolution returned after that.

Thanks for the catch Daniel; updated the description. It was the new laptop with the Intel HD Graphics 5500 integrated card that resolution was capped and video out wasn't working.

The old laptop has a Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller for which the drivers work just fine. Amusingly, after putting the SSD back into the old one; the HDMI port started working again. Maybe the slight jiggling from reassembling the case fixed a connection to the port? I had tried multiple cables, monitors and adapters previously, so the port was definitely dead prior.

Anyway, now that I'm back in the old laptop, I won't be able to test/reproduce this.
