Try adding a Preferred mode, see "III.5. Forcing a preferred mode" at http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12
It goes in the Monitor section, I suggest you associate it with the correct output as in "III.1. Per Output Config".

This can help us to see if the problem is that the monitor is not reporting a "preferred" mode.
