This may be a problem with xmms-flac rather than xmms per se. For me, xmms runs fine, but when xmms-flac is installed, I see:

smueller@clyde:~ $ xmms

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C

Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate loadable module in module_path: "libredmond95.so",

Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate loadable module in module_path: "libredmond95.so",
Message: device: default

Aborted

Nestify; this bug is a duplicate of another bug (Bug #2365). If you follow the link above you will see that the error does seem in xmms-flac as opposed to xmms. Additionally, it may be a good idea to post other comments to that bug rather than this one as this has been marked as a duplicate :). Hope that helps.
