Bug Description

Version in Debian sid / Ubuntu Edgy is 0.9.10. However, this version is 2 years old.

Current stable upstream 1.06.5 is and is downloadable from http://xmlrpc-c.sourceforge.net/downloading.php.

Version 1.0+ has a *significantly* expanded C++ API which works very well. I've been maintaining my own local .deb of xmlrpc-c for over a year now since the Debian maintainer has been ignoring requests for upgrading this library for over a year. Debian bug #317979

In fact, I emailed the maintainer about 9 months ago and offerred to co-maintain ('m a debian developer) the package and send him a diff for the current debian version. However, he never responded.

Perhaps Ubuntu can do better than Debian for this package.

Hello Chris,

it would really be nice if you could update xmlrpc-c to version 1.03.03.
It features some really important changes and I need the latest version
for some projects I'm working on.

Maybe you lack some time at the moment? If yes I could offer you to be
your Co-Maintainer and update it. Maybe you also want me to take the
package over?

Regards,
Flo

Hi,

by now version 1.03.06 has been released. I could really use the new C++
interface that has been introduced in 1.03.

Cheers,

Hi Chris,

I just noted xmlrpc-c is lacking some attention, new upstream release
is available, trivial bugs are not fixed...

I would be happy to help on it until you are not fully back up and
running. I am going to provide updated packages somewhere.

If I do not get any opposing response from you withing about 1 month,
I will proceed with the upload and forced help, ok? :)

Hi Domenico,

I have had a string of people offer to adopt this package over the
last year or so, as I don't really have the time to work on it. But
nobody seems to have actually taken it on yet. You might like to
check with Margarita Manterola <email address hidden>, as they
were the last to offer to take it on.

I hope it will be useful information for people who need new xmlrpc-c packages.

Recently I've found unofficial xmlrpc-c 1.06.11 packages by Luc Saillard
at http://saillard.org/debian/debian-sid-i386/libxmlrpc-c/.

It's not the latest stable version of xmlrcp-c, but it's newer and better version
of xmlrpc-c then ancient version in Debian and Ubuntu.

If you really want the package to get adopted by someone else you should
submit a RFA bug against the package wnpp as described here:
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/ch-pkgs.en.html#s-orphaning
Otherwise others will need to hijack your package -- which is not the
preferred way to go, though...

I hope you will find an adopter soon as I need a newer version of this
library in order to close #441543.

hey folks,

this package is getting waaay out of date. as the current maintainer has
stated in the BR (which has been open for over 2 years), he doesn't really
have the time/interest in continuing to maintain it and has offerred to give
it up to those in the BR, but nothing has happened.

also, gutsy has moved on ahead and packaged the latest version.

personally, i have a small amount of interest in seeing this package updated,
as i would like the xmlrpc support in rtorrent which is blocked by this.
so, unless there are any serious objections i will just grab the version from
gutsy if that seems to work, and follow their lead.

i don't believe that the updating will cause too much problems wrt
transitions, since there's only one reverse depends (openser) for the
package currently in unstable afaict.

if there's anyone who's more interested in permanently maintaining this
package feel free to step up.

   * new upstream release (closes: #317979).

I worked on this package, preparing a "new upstream release", but got
entangled in the middle with some things that didn't work properly...
I don't really remember what were the problems back then.

That's fine with me, I don't have that much interest in the package. I
wanted the update because of a game that I wanted to package, but the
game stopped development, so I lost my interest.

But, please, if you are going to take gutsy's version, do check it for
Debian Quality. I've seen many Ubuntu packages that don't really

Hi,

this bug has been closed in 1.06.18-1, but for some reasons the bug
tracker believes that it's still present in 1.06.21-1. This is another
try to fix this issue.
