A few commands explain more easily the problems that a thousand words:

$ xlsfonts -fn -jis-fixed-medium-r-*
-jis-fixed-medium-r-normal--0-0-75-75-c-0-jisx0208.1983-0
-jis-fixed-medium-r-normal--16-110-100-100-c-160-jisx0208.1983-0
-jis-fixed-medium-r-normal--16-150-75-75-c-160-jisx0208.1983-0
-jis-fixed-medium-r-normal--24-170-100-100-c-240-jisx0208.1983-0
-jis-fixed-medium-r-normal--24-230-75-75-c-240-jisx0208.1983-0
$ xfd -fn -jis-fixed-medium-r-normal--0-0-75-75-c-0-jisx0208.1983-0
Warning: Cannot convert string "-jis-fixed-medium-r-normal--0-0-75-75-c-0-jisx0208.1983-0" to type FontStruct
xfd: no font to display

This occurs for other fonts (-daewoo-gothic-medium-*, -isas-fangsong ti-medium-*, -misc-fixed-medium-r-*-jisx0201 .1976-0).

Note that I've checked that xfd is not failing because of the 0 sized font specification:
$ xfd -fn -unknown-freemono-bold-o-normal--0-0-0-0-c-0-iso8859-1
has no problem.

xlsfonts reports scalable fonts which don't seem to exist.
