A few commands explain more easily the problems that a thousand words:

This occurs for other fonts (-daewoo-gothic-medium-*, -isas-fangsong ti-medium-*, -misc-fixed-medium-r-*-jisx0201 .1976-0).
Note that I've checked that xfd is not failing because of the 0 sized font specification:
$ xfd -fn -unknown-freemono-bold-o-normal--0-0-0-0-c-0-iso8859-1
has no problem.
xlsfonts reports scalable fonts which don't seem to exist.
