Bug Description

In xkeyboard-config 2.19-1 several Indic keyboard layouts were moved to "extras".

The measure has been criticized and has been reverted afterwards at both freedesktop.org and Debian. We should make sure it's reverted in Ubuntu 17.10 as well.

To the release team: This would be a simple change: We could just add the Debian level patch which moves the Indic language back from "extras".

This bug was fixed in the package xkeyboard-config - 2.19-1.1ubuntu1

xkeyboard-config (2.19-1.1ubuntu1) artful; urgency=medium

  * Merge with Debian (LP: #1707929), remaining changes:
    - control, rules, xkb-data-i18n.install, xkb-data.install: Split out
xkb-data-i18n to be used by console-setup.
    - xkb-data.postinst: Remove the xkb cache to make sure it gets
    - debian/patches/elfdalian-kb-layout.diff

xkeyboard-config (2.19-1.1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Non-maintainer upload.
  * Revert blacklisting of Indic layouts (Closes: #865316)

Happy to see this fixed; thank you. What are the chances it could be backported to 17.04?

It seems straightforward enough; it certainly interferes with my ability to work on Indic support in my projects and, by extension, other people's ability to test....

Gunnar Hjalmarsson (gunnarhj) wrote :

@Nathan: We don't backport changes to this package unless some really important bug is spotted. The reason is that many users make custom keyboard configuration by editing xkb-data files, and a package update in a stable release would wipe out such changes. So no, sorry. (17.04 will only live 3 more months anyway.)

Gunnar Hjalmarsson (gunnarhj) wrote :

Btw, it's easy to 'unhide' the Indic layouts in 17.04. Just open a terminal window and run:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources show-all-sources true
