I think there was a simple mistake your side compiling the NVIDIA driver.
You always have to build it with the running kernel you want to use later.

For example what i do is:

install new kernel
stop any graphical login
reboot into the new kernel
install nvidia drivers
start graphical login

and this always worked for me 100% of the times.
