Bug Description

Binary package hint: xfig

A very small font is displayed irrespective of the font selection made in xfig. Also, teh printed font does not correspond in size to the font displayed on-screen. However, what is printed may actually be a better approximation of the selected size and type face than the font displayed on-screen.

I have used synaptic to load font packages beyond the x11 75dpi or 100dpi that get installed by default. So far, no joy with that.

FYI, I have xfig 3.2.4 running in Cygwin on a laptop and all is well there.

The installation here is:

xfig 3.2.5-rel-2ubuntu2, ubuntu 8.10, AMD64

This bug still exists in Ubuntu 14.04. It can be fixed by installing the gsfonts-x11 package. Currently, that package is marked as "suggested" in the xfonts Debian package. I strongly recommend making gsfonts-x11 a full dependency. Although xfig is useful for some purposes without working fonts, I expect most figures created with it will use fonts. (Certainly most of mine do!)

This bug is back in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (I was never bitten by it in previous versions). Installing gsfonts-x11 does not help.

Correction: installing gsfonts-x11 does help, but for some reason you must do xset fp rehash yourself, the installation does not do it for you.
