I had my compose key not working on Unity for quite a while now and couldn't find a solution... Until yesterday I stumbled upon the "input method" setting in the Languages panel in System Settings. Somehow I had it set to "none", or even "maliit" when I had ubuntu-keyboard installed.

Changing that to "IBus" made my Compose key working again.
