That's very simple: opening nautilus in xfce with gnome installed opens
the gnome root window. This looks very much like a bug although some
people will say it isn't (why the hell would I want the gnome root
window when I'm in xfce?). It can be controlled by adding --no-desktop
to the nautilus command, iirc.
