Bug Description

Binary package hint: xemacs21-mule-canna-wnn

I was using Synaptic Package Manager to install "xemacs21-mule-canna-wnn" after some downloading and installing, the process ended, reporting: "Error exit status 2"
There was an option to report the problem, so I chose to send the report and from there was led to this bug report process. (New to Linux, less than one month so...)
As requested here I ran this: $ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release: 10.04
(uname -a) ...2.6.32-24-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 09:22:14 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
'--------------------------------
Then ran this: apt-cache policy xemacs21
xemacs21:
  Installed: 21.4.22-2ubuntu1
  Candidate: 21.4.22-2ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 21.4.22-2ubuntu1 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/universe Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
'--------------------------------
I am used to ultra-edit (under windows) and I am trying editing tools in Linux. "Xemacs" sounded like it might have features that I want, so I tried to install it. I'm not sure what went wrong or if anything actually did. I didn't find any new software listed in the "Applications" menu so I opened a terminal window and put in: $ xemacs (It gave a warning, but opened a program)
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
'--------------------------------
A GUI that says emacs at the top, opened. I don't know how to use it so I can't really say that it works, but I was able to open menus and apparently cause a directory listing to display, so it seems to be functioning at least so some degree.

We need a copy of the log file /var/log/apt/term.log in order to investigate this issue. You need root access (sudo) to copy this file; once you have a copy in a world-readable location, please upload it to this bug report (click the "add attachment or patch" link near the bottom of the bug report's page at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xemacs21/+bug/610659) and we can take it from there.

In the meantime, if you don't have any strong preference about which Emacs version to try, you may want to look at emacs23 which is similar but better maintained and supported.

I ran some other commands in the terminal before getting a copy of the file that you wanted to see (/var/log/apt/term.log). Now, that file only seems to contain information about the recent commands. I was learning about the difference between apt and aptitude. I ran these commands:
$ sudo aptitude keep-all
$ sudo aptitude update
-----W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo aptitude upgrade

In the process of discovering that I had probably overwritten the information that you wanted I noticed this file:
/var/log/apt/term.log.1.gz
I managed to get a copy of it out of that directory and unzipped. The end of the file appears to have the information that you want about xemacs. Or do you need that entire file? size is 296KB, appears to go back to July 16 2010 when I finally got enough disk space away from windows to install Linux with the partition size that I wanted.
I better upload the whole file, you might need to know what else I have installed.
Some further experimenting with xemacs has not revealed any problems yet, it still appears to function correctly.
I am no longer concerned about this bug. If it is your procedure to try and discover the problem anyway, I will help if I can, but otherwise you can just let it go.

Thanks for the emacs23 suggestion. I installed ultraedit for the 30 day trial and when you follow the link on the nag screen the price is $10 less than otherwise (ubuntu users only? not sure). I think I will do that, since I already know how to use UE pretty well. The "find in files" works the way that I need.

Thanks for providing the requested log file. As suspected, this is another instance of an already well-known bug. I will mark it as a duplicate for future tracking.
