Bug Description
Binary package hint: xclip
Intrepid and Jaunty currently use xclip 0.8. This version does not support unicode strings, and cannot read or write them properly. For example, selecting the Hebrew word יש and issuing a "$ xclip -o" command yields the output "u05d9u05e9".
The upstream version, 0.11, supports unicode strings and passes them flawlessly. This has its uses, for example, in translation software.
I ask for the inclusion of a current version of xclip in Jaunty, and, if possible, to backport it to Intrepid too.

Until Ubuntu has an updated version of xclip, one can use the debian package from squeeze: http:// packages. debian. org/squeeze/ xclip
It is version 0.12-1. I had no dependency problem to install it in Jaunty and this unicode/utf-8 problem seems to be fixed.
