Thanks for helping to make Ubuntu better!

I can confirm this bug. Steps to reproduce it:
1) Open XChat with Unity;
2) Enable in XChat: Settings > Preferences > Alerts > Enable system tray icon;
3) Close the preferences window and close the XChat main window;
4) XChat is now inaccessible.

Changed in xchat (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed

Please see bug #584212. Correct solution must be to remove the to systray option. Agree?

And optionally also integrate in system status menus according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MessagingMenu

I think that removing the system tray all together would be a good solution and have notifications coming from Unity along with the mail icon and sound icon would be good. I use 32" widescreens for work and find the system tray being fixed in the top right a real pain now. I miss all my notifications. Unity seems a little inflexible at the moment.

This is a work around that fixes the issue for me:

I just used 'xchat' instead of 'dropbox'

The problem is that the system tray icon flashed a blue thing in it when you were direct messaged or someone pinged your nick on a channel. Now that notification is annoyingly gone...

If you mean the old "!" mark that flashed in the old xchat in the notification indicator place, well now you get the unity notification instead, a small blue triangle on the top left side + a blue arrow (instead of the usual white one) next to the xchat icon on the unity bar. if you don't get them then maybe u could try messing with the xchat notification settings
