If it could be useful, launching it using LANG=C works.

alessandro@whisper:~$ echo $LANG
it_IT.UTF-8
alessandro@whisper:~$ xchat-gnome
XChat CRITICAL *** default event text failed to build!
Aborted (core dumped)

alessandro@whisper:~$ LANG=C xchat-gnome
(this one works)
