It seems the KDE issue is unrelated, as I'm running Gnome.
I've managed to narrow the bug down. It is definitely in winff's source code and it must have been introduced somewhere between versions 1.0.4 and 1.2.0.
I say this because, when installed in a Lucid environment, Karmic's winff version (winff_1.0.4-2ubuntu2) runs perfectly.
