I think my previous statement wasn't quite clear. What I intended to say is that the only situation in which I'd favor a winepulse.drv is when nobody needs winealsa.drv because the pulse native API has become the a de-facto standard, and there's nobody who does not use PulseAudio.

If under such circumstances there are still users who prefer not to use PA, a winealsa.drv could be test-wise maintained out-of-tree to see if it retains critical mass. In case anyone says this would be developer ignorance: Our resources are limited. We have to be ignorant sometimes. Currently, the situation that Linux changes sound APIs like underwear forces us to deal with this situation instead of doing the work we'd actually want to do: Make Windows apps run better.

The fundamental problem is that it's more sexy to write something new, rather than fixing existing solutions.
