Use foobar2k alot (alas there is no adequate alternative for linux, imo). In Lucid everything seems works ok except that eventually sound disappears and i have to restart foobar. Not 100% sure but i think it happens when some other program tries to play sound in same time.
Tired solution described in comment #9 here (playing through OSS) and so far it works fine. Over 24 hours since i started foobar last time and sounds is still here :)
