Okay, this was partly my error. Double clicking an *.exe seems to automatically start the "Archivmanager". The above mentioned error message is from the "Archivmanager". (Why would anyone would want to by-default open an *.exe file with the archive manager?).

Trying to to start it with WINE, this error message occurs:

Es ist bereits eine neuere Version von Internet Explorer auf dem Computer installiert. Setup wird abgebrochen.
----

This is probably due to an attempted installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 under WINE which did not work either (see this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wine/+bug/342271.)
