A default, hardcoded size sounds like a bad idea, as it won’t work on all screens. Would it be enough if the window dimensions were saved and restored across runs? I.e. the window would initially be 800×600 for the first run, and if the user resizes it, the new dimensions would be retained next time the app is started.
