Can you, by any chance, post your script?

I tried this on Lucid by doing

apt-get install zeroc-ice33

which completed fine, then doing

apt-get install vsftpd

which did not try to remove zeroc-ice33. There's also nothing obvious to me that would makes apt want to remove zeroc-ice33 or its dependencies.

Marking incomplete, need a reproducible test case.
