I had similar problem and made it work with this command:
VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force vmware-server-console

Or you may add "VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force" at the beginning of file /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/wrapper-gtk24.sh
