Note that you need to uninstall the "feisty" version of vmware server before installing the tarball version.

Unfortunately, synaptic doesn't remove everything - which prevents you from installing the new version.

I had to delete the /etc/vmware directory to allow the new version to install. This meant I needed to supply the license again.
