Problem solved! I completely uninstalled virtualbox-dkms from Synaptic package manager and the application center of Ubuntu. Then rebooted, and installed it fresh from the application center of the Elementary OS and rebooted again. Finally it worked! I think that the bug may be related to the fact that I am using the Pantheon desktop and get updates from the Elementary OS app center.
