this isn't an issue any longer for me, but not because the bug has been fixed (i doubt it as i have two bugs open for lucid which i've already created, tested, and provided patches for months ago), but because i've moved on to lucid, squeeze, and virtualbox-ose-source 3.2.10-dfsg-1 (backported from squeeze to lucid).
