Bug Description
Binary package hint: vim
The reason behind bug #63133 and bug #59629 is that vim-tiny, the default vim package in edgy, is compiled without multibyte support. This can be confirmed by doing a simple vim --version at a terminal emulation or console. The multibyte feature shows tagged with a minus sign (-), which indicates the feature is not enabled.
Please note that that this is a real bug, already fixed upstream as seen in this bug report:

I can further confirm that the bug is presently fixed in Debian unstable.

Thanks for letting us know about this. I've uploaded this to be applied after the Edgy release candidate (since it's too late for non-essential RC uploads now).
