Comment 2 for bug 1448465

update-alternatives: error: cannot append to '/usr/local/var/log/alternatives.log': No such file or directory

This is certainly very strange and nothing that Ubuntu itself configures. Is your /var or /var/log/ a symlink or bind mount of some sort?
