Having this same issue with 10.04 32-bit. I believe it is an issue with the Plymouth splash screen--It apparently has a special way of requesting input from the user, which the uswsusp process has not yet been updated to use. Even if you disable splash Plymouth is still active to some degree (I think it manages the framebuffer), and you can't enter text.
