I have a setting of 1024x800 in use, because it is the best one for my eyes on this IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad z60m. I use "nosplash" in menu.lst to ignore the problem. Before that, the boot was 2 minutes delayed because of the bad splash. Note that I can bypass the wait also by hitting Atl-F1 to go to the console.
