I don't know what has changed the last couple of days, but because I like the bugreporting I reinstalled again today.
Last time I installed (and usplash didn't work) I installed with alternate from October 1st or some time around.
This time I installed from the October 3rd LiveCD, and it worked perfectly, from the start.
If there are any differences between live and alternate installer versions of usplash, or if there have been any changes to usplash in the last couple of days, I would investigate that further.
