I began having this problem after installing a new graphics card: GeForce GTX 750 Ti.

I agree that it's just a display problem - the console itself works fine, just doesn't show up.

I may need to play with some grub settings to fix this.
Another related effect: The computer seems to "wait" for the graphics card when shutting down. Only does so after several seconds of inactivity followed by a beep.
