I can confirm the last post (#23) - it doesn't solve the problem.

My setup:
Freshly installed Karmic, fully updated (28 Nov 2009)
usplash 0.5.49
nVidia GeForce Go 6800
NVIDIA Driver Version: 185.18.36

Editing grub by removing "quiet splash", then update-grub2 still yields a black screen after pressing CTRL+ALT+F1.
