Yes, I added it in the wrong file. The problem is indeed solved by increasing the timeout, which I did by making a file /etc/rcS.d/S29usplash_timeout.sh with these two lines in it:

#!/bin/sh
/sbin/usplash_write "TIMEOUT 60"
