Bug Description

Over the last few days I have done a few things on my PC (IBM Thinkpad R40), the first was a reinstall of Feisty from DVD to eliminate a dual boot. From there, I upgraded my PC to 7.10 using the alternate installer. When I did this, I had no issues with the login. But I decided to do a fresh install of 7.10, and did so from a Live CD. The installation was successful but now I no longer see anything but a blank screen after the initial Grub text until I get to the login screen. I would have been worried, but there was hard drive activity on my indicator so I decided to wait it out to see if it would go to the login screen. I wanted to inform you of this in case it is happening to anyone else. This is probably similar to bug #153390, but this is an i386-based system and an ATI chipset so I felt it warranted its own bug report. When I loaded from the live CD, I saw the Ubuntu logo and the loading indicator, so it happened sometime after the install. A reboot did not repair anything either.

Thanks for your time.

I also have this problem and it seems to be caused by an incorrect resolution setting in grub. For some reason when I change the resolution in Ubuntu, it doesn't carry over to grub.

Same here. My LCD goes into power savings mode and issues an "input out of range" error.

Adding an appropriate VGA entry to the kernel lines in /boot/grub/menu.lst doesn't appear to help.

If it matters, I'm using the free ATI driver (xserver-xorg-video-ati) on an ATI 8500LE AGP and running @ 1280x1024 on an LG L1710S.

If someone could let me know what information I could provide to help determine where this issue originates I'd be happy to provide it.

I too attempted the tutorial as suggested by Kelsey by following the instructions on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=258484 and they did not work.

I'd like to add some more information. For reasons not relating to this issue, I reinstalled. When I reinstalled from the desktop CD, I still got a blank screen, so I went ahead and installed from the Alternate CD, and I had no problems. The Ubuntu loading screen showed up like it should.

The xorg server only starts just before the login screen, so this is not an issue with the graphic drivers.

Changed in xorg:
