But that same system incentives the truly innocent to plead out rather than risk a guilty verdict. I'm sure you've heard plenty of tales of innocent people taking a deal just because the odds were stacked against them. A few of those tales were even true.
The end result of this is that an innocent person who insists upon their innocence is likely to serve more time than a 'repentant' offender who knows he's fucked and wants to work the system.
I don't know what the solution is, because your point is still completely valid, but don't whitewash this problem. Its serious.
